Open-Source Raspberry Pi Camera Automates a Garden Renovation Time-Lapse

Reading lead

Atypical Workshop built a time-lapse camera to document a garden renovation, using a Raspberry Pi 4 and Camera Module 3 Wide in a custom housing with power delivered over a single PoE cable. Its open-source software captures full-resolution 12-megapixel images every minute during daylight, calculating the capture window from latitude and longitude to account for seasonal changes. The system manages storage by deleting the oldest frames when the SD card exceeds 85% capacity. A Mac can automatically collect the image archive when its drive is connected, and a single command creates a video from a selected date range. The builder also describes a film mode and phone control. A step-by-step guide is still in progress; the article points readers to GitHub, YouTube, and Reddit for current details and mentions a project cost breakdown without stating the amount.

Atypical workshop built this time-lapse camera to document a garden renovation. He goes through the whole process from stabilizing the camera, building the housing, installing the hardware and a cost breakdown at the end. A step-by-step guide is in the works but for now you can checkout Github, YouTube, and Reddit for details:

I built a time-lapse camera around a Raspberry Pi 4 with a Camera Module 3 Wide, powered over a single PoE cable, and I’ve open sourced the software. The Pi takes a full 12MP photo every minute in daylight only, working out the window from your latitude and longitude so it follows the seasons, and it looks after its own storage by deleting the oldest frames once the SD card passes 85%. A Mac collects the frames automatically whenever the archive drive is plugged in, and one command turns any date range into a video. There’s also a film mode and you can control it from your phone.
