ESP32-S3 Project Plays Video by Streaming JPEG Frames from microSD

Reading lead

Tech Talkies has built a miniature television-style video player using a MaTouch Lite ESP32-S3 board with a 2.4-inch ST7789 SPI IPS touchscreen. Rather than decode H.264 on the microcontroller, the project converts a clip in advance into sequential JPEG images resized to the display’s resolution. The ESP32-S3 reads those frames from a microSD card and draws them to the screen, creating video-like playback while keeping the image data off the board’s internal flash. Firmware is available through the Tech Talkies Flasher page. The project does not describe measured playback performance or broader format support; a simpler conversion tool, playback controls and support for additional display resolutions are listed as future additions.

Tech Talkies built a small video player around an ESP32-S3 and posted the build on Hackster.io. The board is a MaTouch Lite ESP32-S3 with a 2.4 inch ST7789 SPI IPS touchscreen, dressed up as a miniature television.

Decoding H.264 on a microcontroller is not practical, so the project sidesteps the problem. A video is converted ahead of time into a sequence of JPEG images, each resized to the display resolution and written to a microSD card. The ESP32-S3 reads the frames in order and draws them to the screen fast enough to look like playback. Keeping the frames on the card means the clip does not eat into the board’s internal flash.

Firmware can be installed from the Tech Talkies Flasher page. Tech Talkies lists a friendlier conversion tool, playback controls, and support for more display resolutions as things still to add.
