Lxa Brings AmigaOS Applications to Linux Without Amiga Hardware
导读
Guenter Bartsch has published lxa, an MIT-licensed Linux compatibility layer for running AmigaOS executables. It combines a 68000 CPU emulator with AmigaOS library implementations and bridges system calls to Linux file and I/O operations. The project targets OS-compliant applications rather than hardware-specific software: it does not emulate ECS or AGA chip registers, and uses RTG with Picasso96 for graphics. Its stated aim is to support Amiga development and productivity software on Linux PCs and Raspberry Pi systems without an Amiga machine. Development is checked against an AmigaOS 3.1 reference system using a twin runner that compares Intuition trees, pixel snapshots and text output. The project reports that all 9,932 executables in the Fred Fish collection have been run under lxa. Version 0.11.28 completes milestone M2, with GELs, copper lists, PaletteExtra and library versions reported as matching AmigaOS 3.1; the supplied material does not establish broader compatibility or independently verify performance.

Guenter Bartsch has published lxa, a Linux Amiga emulation layer on GitHub. It runs AmigaOS executables natively on Linux in the way WINE runs Windows programs. A 68000 CPU emulator is paired with AmigaOS library implementations, and system calls are bridged to Linux file and I/O operations. On first run it creates a ~/.lxa/ directory with the system files it needs.
Because lxa targets OS-compliant applications only, it does not emulate ECS or AGA chip registers. Display goes through RTG with Picasso96, so true-color screens at arbitrary resolutions are possible. The stated goal is a development platform for Amiga software on Linux: productivity applications, IDEs and GUI toolkit apps running on a Linux PC or Raspberry Pi with no Amiga hardware.
Development is checked against a real AmigaOS 3.1 reference machine. A twin runner executes the same scenario on lxa and on the reference, then compares Intuition trees, pixel snapshots and text output. All 9932 executables from the Fred Fish collection have been run under lxa. Version 0.11.28 closes milestone M2, with GELs, copper lists, PaletteExtra and library versions matching AmigaOS 3.1.

Concrete open-source tool that runs AmigaOS binaries on Linux without Amiga hardware, with a documented RTG approach and twin-runner testing against AmigaOS 3.1; claims remain project-reported rather than independently verified, and chipset emulation is out of scope.
